Auli is a recently developed winter ski resort in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Perched at an elevation of 2,500 metres, Auli offers a magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges and excellent slopes covered in soft snow meant for skiing. Essentially a small and serene hill-station, Auli offers excellent treks and nature walks to nearby places. Before Auli was developed as a ski resort, its slopes were the training ground for the ski-equipped personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. Among the legendary peaks surrounding Auli is the 23,490-feet-high Trishul. It was the scene of a unique expedition in 1958 when the mountaineers took four days to climb the peak and only 90 minutes to ski down to the base camp. History The temple at Joshimath is one of the four set up by the famous Indian saint, Guru Adi Shankaracharya. These are called pithas and are revered by Hindus all over India. The local semi nomadic Bhotiya tribes have inhabited Auli and the nearby areas for many centuries. These tribes carried out trade with the Tibetan nomads and since then, cultural intermingling has been a constant feature between these two regions. The slopes that are now popular for skiing once used to be the training grounds for the Indo-Tibetan border police force.A famous and daring skiing descent from the 23490 feet high Trishul peak was successfully attempted in 1958. Skiing down took only 90 minutes while the climb had taken four days. Special Attractions in Auli: Skiers are getting the clean stretches of 10 to 20 kilometers which are entirely snow covered slopes. The forests on the slopes of Auli reduces the velocity of winds during the month of Feburary and March. It is the special tourist spot that often hosts the National Winter Games. The government and the local authorities involves the Garhwali people to enjoy the sport and also to explore the slopes of Indian Himalayas. |
